Anglican Church Archives Network in British Columbia

Site provides an online search capability and a browseable listing of records held in the Anglican Provincial Synod of BC and Yukon Archives along with the five Diocesan Archives in British Columbia. Site also provides contact information for each archives.

British Columbia Archives (Royal BC Museum)

Site provides information about the functions and activities of the agency / information on services available and conditions of use of facilities and holdings / direct e-mail provision for collection inquiries / exhibitions / searchable descriptions of: general library resources (catalogue entries), government and non-government textual records, moving images, and visual and cartographic records (catalogue entries/descriptions) with capability to view photographic images and a select number of map and moving images / other features: reference guides, virtual reference room (electronic map), searchable index to newspapers on microfilm at the BC Archives and the Legislative Library of BC, hypertext version of the BC Archives' Records and Information Management Manual. An important feature of the site is the Vital Events section, which provides searchable on-line indexes of birth, marriage and death registrations in BC. A highly-acclaimed feature is an exhibit entitled the British Columbia Archives Time Machine, an educational web resource designed for teachers and school-age children.

 

British Columbia Central Coast Archives

Site provides information about the activities, services and holdings of the Archives along with an online historical photograph database and a major online exhibit relating to the history of the Bella Coola Valley.

 

British Columbia Institute of Technology Archives

Site provides information about the holdings, services and policies of the Archives. Of particular interest is a searchable digitized multimedia collection on the history of aircraft maintenance training at BCIT.

Campbell River Museum and Archives

Site provides information on the holdings and services of the Archives at the Campbell River Museum and Archives. You can also browse a listing of holdings and search general descriptions. Web resources include "'A Moment in Time', A Collection of Henry Twidle's Photographs", a virtual exhibit incorporating photographs from the archival holdings of the Museum at Campbell River taken by Henry Twidle at the beginning of the 20th century. Photographs include logging camps, commercial fishing boats and canneries, and pioneer settlements and settlers. An earlier online gallery of historical photographs depicting fishing technology is also still available.

 

Chilliwack Archives

Site provides information on the services and holdings of the archives along with the capability to search and browse a listing of fonds and collections at the archives.

 

City of Burnaby Archives

Site provides information on the policies, holdings and services of the archives. Includes descriptions of its municipal government holdings.

 

City of Coquitlam Archives

Site provides information on the archival and records management policies of the city, information on accessing and using its archival holdings, and a listing of current descriptive inventories.

 

City of Richmond Archives

Site provides online access to a descriptive database of over 21,000 records including a photo search for over 7,000 scanned images and a new map search for 1,100 digitized maps, plans and aerial photographs. Site includes information on the functions, activities and services of the City of Richmond Archives; descriptions of oral histories in the Archives' holdings, along with indexes to biography files and reference files; the Archives' Newsletter; information on publications of the Archives; information about joining the Friends of the Richmond Archives; an "Archives FAQs" page; and, a virtual exhibit section.

 

City of Surrey Archives

Site provides information about the mandate, holdings and reference services at the City of Surrey Archives, along with an online Heritage Photograph Collection illustrating two major facets of the city's history, townsites and transport.

 

City of Vancouver Archives

Site provides online access through a comprehensive database to descriptions of public (City of Vancouver government) records, private records, historical photographs, and pamphlet collection in the holdings of the Archives. Online photograph database contains approximately 12,500 scanned images. Other features of the site include: information about functions and activities; hours of operation; staff; use of facilities; a series of User/Research Guides; and information on donating material, on joining the Friends of the Archives, and on current exhibits and new holdings.

 

City of Victoria Archives

Site provides information on the variety of functions and activities of the archives and on the many programs and services it offers. Includes general descriptions of archival holdings and user guides to common areas of research carried out at the archives. Features include online access to descriptions of or indexes for city government records, private records and documents, maps and plans, and photographs. An important feature for genealogists is an online Vital Statistics Search, which allows users to search Ross Bay Cemetery records (1872-1980), Death Notices Index (1901-1939), and the Marriage Notices Index (1901-1939). A new feature is a section entitled "Victoria Vignettes", which provides online access to videos focusing on different aspects of Victoria's heritage.

Of special interest to researchers are exhibitions (virtual displays) and online finding aids, including: Archival Inventories section, which provides online access to full, multi-level finding aids; the UBC Library Digital Resources, a searchable database consisting of images and bibliographic descriptions of historical photographs from the University Archives and Rare Books and Special Collections; Sound and Moving Images database; and, database of holdings descriptions (existing catalogue entries) at UBC Archives. A new feature is UBC Digitized Publications, which provides online access to almost 53,000 scanned pages of The Ubyssey (1918-1998), UBC Reports (1955-2002), and the Alumni Chronicle (1931-2000).

 

University of British Columbia Library Charles Woodward Memorial Room
