Education Opportunities and Workshops
The AABC provides fundamental level courses, based on a prepared curriculum, to assist individuals working in community archives to gain a basic knowledge of archival work, using Canadian archival standards.
These courses are also of interest to individuals who are responsible for records management and/or providing reference service for their institution and the general public. The AABC does not provide in-house training for individual institutions, but it can advise on options available for institutions planning staff training and does respond to requests for courses initiated by interested groups.
Sponsored workshops are regular workshops which are provided to specific groups on an ad hoc basis.
The AABC also arranges specialized workshops delivered by experts on a variety of archival and preservation topics.
For information on workshop registration, costs and deadlines, see Registration Notes below.

Introduction to Archival Preservation (Distance Education)
For many years, the AABC offered an Introduction to Archival Preservation as a two-day workshop. In recognition of the expense and inconvenience of travelling to a "live" presentation of the course, the AABC has developed an introductory course following a correspondence distance education model.
Because participants will work through a text over a two month period, the AABC is able to offer a more thorough introduction than is possible in a weekend workshop, but the information covered remains the same. Preserving Archives and Manuscripts by Mary Lynn Ritzenthaler (2010) will be used as the basic textbook for the course. The text book will be supplemented by with articles, survey tools and condition reporting assessments available on the Internet. Using the textbook and the on-line references, participants will be introduced to archival preservation in seven modules. Each module has a Self-Study Guide which provides directions for each module, supplementary readings, self-study questions, and, in most modules, a practical project.
Module 1: Basic concepts and terminology in archival
preservation
Module 2. Basic material science of paper records and
photographs
Module 3. Basic material science of machine readable
records and electronic media
Module 4. Concepts for understanding design
requirements for archives buildings andstorage environments
Module 5. The exhibition of archival records
Module 6. Basics of emergency planning
Module 7. Preservation management planning
