The following is a general listing of funding opportunities available to archives in British Columbia.
Detailed descriptions of these programs are provided below.
Eligibility criteria are different for each opportunity; please review all applicable guidelines.

Provincial Government Supported Programs ▪ In 2001, the British Columbia provincial government eliminated grant funding programs specifically allocated for community archives and archival organizations in BC. The Community Archives Assistance Program (CAAP) and the Community Archives Advisory and Training Program (CAAT) were discontinued.

Archival Community Digitization Program - Canadian Council of Archives

The Canadian Memory Fund/Canadian Culture Online program sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage makes funding available to the archival community to develop unique, digitized, online cultural content. Library and Archives Canada administers the funding process for the archival community through the Canadian Council of Archives as the Archival Community Digitization Program (ACDP). Funds may be provided for up to 50 per cent of total project expenses.

National Archival Development Program - Canadian Council of Archives
Application deadline for 2010 / 2011: December 4, 2009
The National Archival Development Program (NADP) sponsored by Library and Archives Canada provides funds for a wide range of archival projects under five different objectives to further the development of a coordinated national archival system. Funding is available to archives in BC who are institutional members of the Archives Association of British Columbia (AABC).
The Canadian Council of Archives (CCA) manages all aspects of the program, with the assistance of the AABC in the adjudication of funding applications.
The 2010 / 2011 NADP documentation is available. For more information on the program or to download the documentation, visit the Canadian Council of Archives web site. Eligibility: Only archival institutions that have Full Institutional AABC membership status are eligible to apply for NADP funding. AABC Associate Institutional members are NOT eligible for NADP funding.
BC archival institutions interested in applying to NADP must ensure that their membership status is current. Please consult the AABC Full Institutional Members List prior to application. If your institution is a current Full Institutional Member and is not in this listing please email Sarah Romkey, Membership Committee Chair, so that the membership listing can be updated.
BC archival institutions interested in applying for full AABC institutional membership should note that the review process may take 3-4 months and should be undertaken well in advance of considering an NADP funding application. Please see the Membership page for more information.
Application process: Applications must be submitted by postal mail and in electronic format. Both documents must be received no later than December 4, 2009. Late submissions will not be considered.

Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage - Department of Canadian Heritage
Application deadline: September 30, 2009
The Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage (BCAH) program provides funding for local arts and heritage festivals and community historical anniversaries programming.

Cultural Spaces Canada - Department of Canadian Heritage
Application deadline: Applications are accepted throughout the year. See the website for more details.
Through Cultural Spaces Canada, the Department of Canadian Heritage provides funding to successful applicants of up to 33 per cent of total eligible project costs for construction and renovation of arts and heritage facilities as well as for projects that transform buildings that were not previously used for cultural purposes into arts or heritage facilities.
The Department also provides funding to successful applicants of up to 50 per cent of total eligible project costs for specialized equipment purchases and feasibility studies.

Young Canada Works -Canadian Council of Archives

Young Canada Works is a Department of Canadian Heritage program that provides funding for organizations to hire youth (under the age of 30) to carry out a wide range of archival projects. The Canadian Council of Archives (CCA) is the delivery organization for the archival community.

Direct Access Grant- BC Ministry of Housing and Social Development
Application deadline: Between February 1 and May 31 each year for the Arts, Culture and Sport sector
Direct Access Grants allow non-profit organizations to apply for provincial gaming revenues to support direct delivery of a program that benefits the broader community. Local organizations can apply for up to $100,000 per year.

British Columbia History Digitization Program - Irving K. Barber Learning Centre

The BC History Digitization Program is sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at the University of British Columbia. The program provides financial support for digitization projects providing online access to unique British Columbia historical materials. AMS Hannah Development Grants provide funding to support well-defined projects that will enhance or strengthen the infrastructure in the field of history of medicine and health care in Canada. Such projects might include requests for seed money to develop research initiatives, the organization of small conferences, and one-time opportunities for archival and museum activities. Proposals are expected to advance an aspect of medical history that could have benefits for the broader community of practitioners in the field. Grants are generally awarded up to a maximum of $10,000 for one year, normally commencing July 1.

Hbc Grant Program - Hbc History Foundation (Hudson’s Bay Company)

The Hudson’s Bay Company History Foundation provides grants greater than $1000 for projects relating to Hudson’s Bay Company history.See the Hbc History Foundation website for details and application forms.
Hbc Local History Grant Program - Hbc History Foundation (Hudson’s Bay Company)

The Hbc Local History Grant Program provides up to $1000 for projects promoting greater public awareness of Canadian history, particularly among young people.See the Hbc History Foundation website for details and application forms.
Heritage Trust Project - EMC Corporation
Application deadline: TBA
The EMC Heritage Trust Project funds digitization projects throughout the world. Grants of up to $15,000 are provided; no matching funds are required.

The History Education Network (THEN) is devoted to the improvement of history teaching and learning by bringing together academic historians, public historians in museums, archives and historic sites, practicing teachers, researchers based in faculties of education, and curriculum policy makers. THEN provides up to $2500 in funding for small projects related to history teaching and learning in Canada.

Terry Reksten Memorial Fund - Friends of the British Columbia Archives
Application deadline: June 30 each year
The Terry Reksten Memorial Fund offers an award of $1,000 to a community archives in British Columbia to assist in the work of acquiring, preserving, indexing or disseminating information on the archival documentary heritage of British Columbia. The award is administered by the Friends of the British Columbia Archives.
