BC Archival Network Service (BCANS)The British Columbia Archival Network Service is responsible for the maintenance and development of Internet-based network resources created by the Archives Association of British Columbia, including MemoryBC: the British Columbia Archival Information Network. BCANS provides advice and assistance to archival institutions in the province wishing to use MemoryBC to contribute new or revised information.
Education Opportunities and Workshops AABC educational opportunities and workshops are offered through both the Education and Advisory Service and the Archival Preservation Service. Available are a wide range of workshops and seminars designed to provide fundamental-level education and ongoing professional development to individuals and institutions managing or working with archival material, providing records management services, or providing public / internal reference service. AABC Archivist's Toolkit The AABC Archivist's Toolkit is an on-line community resource designed to assist those working in the British Columbia archives community at all levels. Special care is taken to provide resources for small and medium-sized archives. Archives-related sites across Canada and internationally link to this valuable resource.
The goal of Archives Week is to raise public awareness of the importance of archival records. Each year, institutions and individuals working in the archives field are encouraged to think of ways to celebrate Archives Week in their community. A theme for the year is chosen; however, the activity does not have to be related to the theme.
Plan an event to showcase your archives and raise public awareness. Ideas include: creating an exhibit, organizing an open house, giving tours, offering special workshops or seminars or writing an article for the local newspaper. The AABC On-line Job Board lists employment opportunities in the fields of archives and records management in British Columbia or of interest to members of the BC archival community. Employment opportunities are posted under Professional positions and Technician, support and volunteer positions. The Job Board webpage includes category details and guidelines for submission of postings to the service.
Electronic Mailing List -- archives-bc The AABC maintains an electronic mailing list ("archives-bc") for the exchange of information, by, for, and about archives and archivists in British Columbia. Information on subscription and use is available. OTHER PROGRAMS AND SERVICESThe Archives Marketplace provides space for private archival contractors and businesses to make their archival services known to the community. The BC Archival Contractors List is an offline list of archival contractors that may be provided to institutions and members of the public upon request. The list includes the name and contact information of contractors who will field questions from the public about rates and services. Please note that this list is provided as a convenience to institutions and individuals seeking contract archivists. The Archives Association of British Columbia does not endorse the individuals listed on the BC Contractors List. It is designed to help persons in small archives, with limited access to training, few employees, and restricted finances and time. The manual explains archival principles and practices, offers guidelines and suggestions for various archival activities, and provides information on other available resources. A Manual for Small Archives is available online.
The Association also published two indexing tools for the archival community, the British Columbia Thesaurus: a subject indexing tool for B.C. Archives (1990) and the Municipal & Local Terms: A Supplement to The British Columbia Thesaurus (1993). The BC Thesaurus and the Supplement are available online.
The AABC Newsletter provides local, regional, provincial and national archival news; notices of upcoming events; editorials; articles; and other information of interest to the members of the provincial archival community.
