Workshop overview:

This workshop will provide a broad introductory overview of the concept and practice of archival repatriation. This workshop will cover everything from the history of repatriation to practical solutions for implementing repatriation projects at your institution. We will discuss a range of approaches to repatriation such as community access, digital repatriation, shared stewardship agreements, and physical repatriation. The workshop will use real-life examples and provide opportunities to brainstorm practical solutions for your organization. A focus of the workshop will be on the importance of relationships. Please bring examples from your archive or workplace that you would like to explore.

Participants will learn:

The role that relationships play in a successful repatriation project
How to apply legislation and policy to support repatriation projects
How to determine the right kind of repatriation project for the partner community

This workshop will not be recorded.

Instructors:

Angie Bain is a professional researcher with the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs. She is a member of the Lower Nicola Indian Band of the Nlaka'pamux Nation. Angie's work has specialized in land claims, indigenous laws, and community histories. She is a frequent user of local, regional, national and international archives.

Genevieve Weber is a settler archivist and heritage professional. After completing her MAS (First Nations Concentration Curriculum) she worked with and for many First Nations, including the Nisga’a Nation, the Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nations, and communities represented in the MOA (Museum of Anthropology) collections. During her time at the BC Archives Genevieve was the community liaison for the archives and was involved in numerous access, digitization, shared stewardship, and repatriation projects.

Format:

The workshop will be delivered using Zoom webinar software. Zoom is free to download and links will be provided to participants before the workshop starts. Participants will need access to a computer with sound/speakers to view the PowerPoint training slides and participate in discussions.

The workshop schedule will include morning and afternoon breaks along with a 60 min lunch break.

Managing an archives program and all of the necessary day-to-day administrative tasks can feel overwhelming if you find yourself in this role but don’t have experience or training. However taking a step back to establish meaningful strategies and practical approaches can help to create a sound foundation towards success. Join us for this webinar where we will we discuss managing “the big picture” of an archives program including governance and succession planning, relevant policies and procedures, the value of strategic planning, and working through organizational change with staff and volunteers. Guest speaker Christine Meutzner will review the importance of budgeting and discuss how to use a strategic budget, a simple income statement, and a balance sheet.

Topics will include: the definition of public domain (i.e. the difference between what is available publicly vs. “public domain” as a legal concept); litigation risks in the absence of donor paperwork; the use of materials found online; the scope of materials that can be shared from the archives; the intersection of privacy and copyright; Crown copyright; digitizing materials that are out of operation in print; the treatment of AI in copyright law; enforcement of copyright law; sources to consult regarding specific copyright questions; and the interaction of Anglo-American IP laws with Indigenous Ownership.

Archives are often perceived as static repositories of the past: collections of documents, images and records preserved for future reference. Yet archives are also spaces of human experience, carrying traces of lives, emotions, relationships and memories. Through an empathical approach to archiving, archival materials can be reanimated as sources of connection, understanding and storytelling. By viewing archives not as fixed containers of truth but as living resources for narrative-making, attendees will discover ways to bring historical materials into dialogue with contemporary audiences. This general presentation introduces the concept of storytelling as an archival practice.

Archives 101: Archival Practice with Indigenous Organizations

The AABC is pleased to present the workshop “Archives 101: Archival Practice with Indigenous Organizations”. With the support of the Documentary Heritage Communities Program (DHCP), registration is now open.

February 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 19, 2027

Registration Fee: $55.00 CAD per person

Workshop overview:

The workshop “Archives 101: Archival Practice with Indigenous Organizations” will be of interest to Tribal/First Nations Government administrators, archivists, cultural memory keepers, community members, and students working to support and develop Indigenous archives programs. The workshop will provide an introduction to archival theory and best practices that participants will be able to use on a daily basis.

Participants will learn:

- how to create a foundation for developing their archives program and strategies for the practical management and appraisal of records;

- how to provide collaborative Indigenous and western access protocols;

- how to process and maintain access to records created on different media formats (textual records, audio-visual, sound recordings and electronic records);

- best practices for disaster planning;

- where to find archival resources and different funding opportunities available for Indigenous organizations.

Woven throughout the discussion topics will be reflections on how western archival practices can be balanced and integrated to support Indigenous practices and protocols of knowledge sharing.

Upon registration, participants will be asked to complete a brief survey to identify training interests and questions that will be incorporated into the workshop materials and discussions.
