Archives 101: Archival Practice for Indigenous Archives

The AABC is pleased to present the 2-day workshop “Archives 101: Archival Practice for Indigenous Organizations”. With the support of the BC Arts Council, we are pleased to offer a Winter 2023 session held between January 23 - February 1, 2023.

Workshop overview:

“Archives 101: Archival Practice for Indigenous Organizations” will be of interest to Tribal/First Nations Government administrators, archivists, cultural memory keepers, and community members and students working to support Indigenous archives programs.

The workshop will provide an introduction to archival theory and best practices that participants will be able to use on a daily basis. Workshop participants will learn how to create a foundation for developing their archives program and strategies for the practical management and appraisal of records. They will learn how to process and provide access to records created on different media formats (textual records, audio-visual, sound recordings and electronic records). Workshop discussion will also include best practices for disaster planning, where to find archival resources, and different funding opportunities available for Indigenous organizations. Woven throughout the discussion topics will be reflections on how western archival practices can be balanced and integrated to support Indigenous practices and protocols of knowledge sharing and access.

Prior to the workshop, participants will be asked to complete a brief survey to identify issues and questions that will be incorporated into the training and discussions.

Instructor:

The workshop will be delivered by Lisa Glandt, MAS, Education and Advisory Services Coordinator for the AABC. Lisa has been delivering this workshop both online and in-person throughout British Columbia since 2018 and brings over 22 years of archival experience to her training.

Format:

The 2-day workshop will be delivered over 4 online sessions and it is recommended that participants attend all sessions in order to fully complete the workshop.

The workshop will be delivered using Zoom webinar software. Zoom is free to download and links will be provided to participants before the workshop starts. Participants will need access to a computer with sound/speakers to view and follow along with the PowerPoint training slides.
