Distance Education
The AABC offers a series of 7 distance education courses that are offered in a rotation of 3 different courses per year. To learn more about each course, click on the course calendar links below.
We are pleased to support a wide-range of students who have successfully completed AABC distance education courses - archival professionals looking to brush up their skills or learn about a specific record type (photographs, architectural records etc.); museum, library, and gallery Curators/collections staff who work with archival records; colleagues in the general heritage profession; history students; archives volunteers; and members of the general public who have an interest in archives.
There are no prerequisites required to register for any of the courses, however it is beneficial to have some experience working or volunteering in an archival setting in order to complete assignments in a meaningful way.
The courses may be taken in any order and students are welcome to take as many (or as few) courses as they like. At this time our distance education courses are not University-accredited.

Course Format The distance education courses are fully self-directed and there are no online components or group webinars. This allows students to work on the course at their own pace and schedule. At the start of the course the students are provided with a course overview, expectations, and the Self-Study Guide which contains the required readings. The course content is developed to provide an introduction to the course-related archival theory and then specific best-practices related to the topic as supported by the textbooks and supplemental readings. The courses are divided into 7 thematic Modules and each contains questions and a small, applicable project that are completed by the student and then submitted to the course instructor for review and marking. The courses run 10 weeks and students can expect to spend up to 10-12 hours per week on the readings and assignments. The course instructor is available by email to help along the way if students have any questions. All instruction is in English. Though the textbooks readings and course content is applicable to archivists across many cultures and languages, the supplemental readings usually provide a Canadian perspective. After successfully completing all of the Module questions and projects within the course time frame, students receive a certificate of completion for the course.
